Membership:

How do I register?
You can get basic membership with My Old Motors by clicking here. Once you have registered you must check your email account inbox to confirm your email address. A message will have been sent to you in which you have to click a link to complete registration. It is therefore important that you use your real email address to sign up!

Can I edit my personal details later?
Yes. Once you have signed in, click Your Details in the menu.

What personal information do you ask for when I sign up?
All we ask for is your full name, your email address (used as your username) and a password to gain access to the site. We also ask where you heard about My Old Motors. We will NEVER ask for credit card details or your address. If you receive an email masquerading as one from My Old Motors asking for such information, DO NOT REPLY. It will not be genuine.
If you sign up for full membership, you will be asked for payment details and your address by Paypal. My Old Motors NEVER see the information you enter into the Paypal form. You can view their policies at www.PayPal.com.

How is my personal information used?
The information you give us to gain basic membership remains on our database. We never give it to a third party. It is simply used to allow you to log in to the site. The password you give us will only ever be sent to the email address with which you signed up.

Is paying for full membership secure?
Yes. All the information you enter into the payment form is used by PayPal, not My Old Motors. My Old Motors never see your payment details or address. You can view PayPal's policies at www.PayPal.com.

Do My Old Motors see my credit card details?
No. Never. Any details you enter into the payment form for full membership are used solely by PayPal.

If I forget my password, can I get onto the site?
Yes. Simply click on the Forgot Your Password link in the log-in box. You will need to know the email address with which you signed up. If you no longer have access to that email account MY Old Motors will NOT send the password to any other email account.

What do My Old Motors do to combat spam mail in my email account?
Well, we never give your details to a third party. So if you are getting any spam, it's not as a result of signing up with us. Try not to give too many websites your email address as many do sell the information to bulk-mailers.

How long is full registration for?
Full registration is for 12 months. Once the time has elapsed, you will become a basic member again.

How do I login?
Go to the homepage and enter your details in the 'Log in' box on the right hand side.

How do I logout?
Click 'Logout' in the menu on the left hand side. It is recommended that you log out after each session if you are using a shared computer.

Can I close my account?
My Old Motors do not delete accounts from the database. It causes too much upheaval finding all the cars the member has entered and deleting them individually. If you wish to stop using My Old Motors we would encourage you to leave the cars you have registered in the database. However, if you wish to take them of you can delete them individually from the View My Cars page.

How do I complete registration?
To complete basic registration, check your email account. There should be a message from us in your inbox. Click the link in the message and you will become a basic member.

When I login, I don't have full membership. Why?
Full membership has to be paid for. Basic membership allows you to add cars to the database and search those that are already entered. The advantages of full membership are being able to read the full entries against each car and having the ability to contact cars' owners.

Why can't I see all the details of other members' cars?
Because you are not a full member. Full membership is £4.95 for 12 months. If you are a full member and still can't see full details, then perhaps the person hasn't entered any more details yet. If you are sure this isn't the case then email us at webmaster@myoldmotors.co.uk and explain the situation to us.

Why do you charge for full membership?
We charge for two reasons. The first is to deter nuisance people from contacting members of the website. We believe £4.95 is a reasonable amount to ask of someone trying to find out the history of their car, yet enough to deter someone from playing a prank. The second reason is to help pay for the hosting of the website. The £4.95 subscriptions are the only income we receive directly from the website.

I can't login!
Perhaps you haven't confirmed your email address when you registered? Check your email address for an email from us and click the link in it to activate your account.
Perhaps you have forgotten your password. Click here to get your password emailed to you. Finally, it is possible that your browser doesn't allow 'cookies'. See below for a description of a cookie. To allow cookies, in your header click on TOOLS, then INTERNET OPTIONS, followed by the PRIVACY tab. Set your privacy level to Low or clcik the EDIT button towards the bottom of the page to override cookie handling for different websites. Then follow the instructions on screen.

Cars and plates:

How do I add a car to the database?
Once you are a basic member, you can add as many cars as you wish to the database. Simply login and click Add a Car in the left hand menu. Add as much detail as you can. You must enter details against each compulsory field, denoted by an asterisk (*). Once you are happy with what you have written, click SUBMIT at the bottom of the form. You can alter what you have written at a later date by clicking on View My Cars in the left hand menu.

Can I edit my car entries later?
Yes. You can alter all of your cars' details at any time by clicking on View My Cars in the left hand menu.

How do I search for other cars?
Click on Search Cars in the left hand menu then enter the desired number plate. We will offer different ways of searching in the near future. If the numberplate you have entered brings no results then that car has not been entered by any members.

Can I buy numberplates on My Old Motors?
We are currently in discussion with a number plate dealer and will hopefully soon be offering nearly every numberplate available for sale in the UK on the site!

Where do you get the numberplates that are for sale from?
The company with whom we would be affiliated would tell us the registrations that are for sale.

If I remember some more details about a car, can I add them?
Yes. Simply login and click on View My Cars in the left hand menu. Then click EDIT against whichever car you want to alter.

Can I delete one of my cars?
Yes. Simply login and click on View My Cars in the left hand menu. Then click DELETE against whichever car you want to delete.

Can I contact the owner of a car?
If you have full membership then yes you can. When viewing the full details of a vehicle, click the "Contact the author of this entry" link at the top of the listing.

Does it cost anything to add a car?
No. Simply sign up for basic membership and you can add as many cars as you wish!

Does it cost anything to search for a car?
No. Simply login and click on Search Cars in the left hand menu. With basic membership you can only read basic details of the car, but with full membership you get full details of the car, any photographs that have been uploaded and the chance to contact the owner.

Can I add photos of my car?
Yes. When you are adding a new car or editing a current one there is an option at the bottom of the form to add up to five photos. They must be of *.JPG file type, i.e. not *.BMP or *.GIF. This is because we have limited space on the host drive and bitmap images can take up to fifty times that of a JPG! Please keep all images below 100kb.

View our Privacy Policy here.

What is a cookie?
A cookie is a tiny piece of text asking permission to be placed on your computer's hard drive. If you agree, then your browser adds the text in a small file.

Are cookies safe?
Yes. A cookie is a short piece of data, not code, which is sent from a web server. It is not an executable program and cannot do anything to your machine. This means that cookies can neither be viruses, nor collect sensitive information about you and send it somewhere undesirable. Cookies, once set, can be read only by the server site that sets them, and no other site.

Why do you put a cookie on my computer?
Like virtual door keys, cookies unlock a computer's memory and allow a website to recognise users when they return to a site by opening doors to different content or services. Like a key, a cookie itself does not contain information, but when it is read by a browser it can help a website improve the service delivered. The cookie we use lets your computer remember the username and password you use to access the website, so you don't have to enter it every time you pass to a new page.

I can upload pictures onto My Old Motors, so can My Old Motors get any other files off my computer?
The programming of My Old Motors is designed so that the only file(s) that are uploaded are those selected by the user at the time.
